Silica SiO 2 is of concern to hobbyists because it is used by diatoms to create their skeletons. Outbreaks of diatoms are characterized by brown coatings or filaments.
While diatoms in themselves are not harmful useless they smother sessile invertebrates they can be unsightly. Some artificial saltwater manufacturers will not include silica in their mix. Since diatoms are photosynthetic, limiting phosphorus along with silica can control their population within aquaria. Two Little Fishies, Inc. They offer a variety of products ranging from fish and invertebrate foods to aquarium supplements. PhosBan phosphate adsorption media.
Treated water exits the reactor and returns to the aquarium. How well do these products perform and are they worthy of your consideration?
These are the recommendations made by TLF:. Iron particles possess a natural positive charge these ions can have a valence of 2 or 3 while phosphorus possesses a negative charge.
Figure 2 demonstrates that, when ortho-phosphate content is subtracted from the amount of total phosphate, the level remains relatively stable, indicating removal of reactive ortho-phosphate only. Figure 1. See Discussion section below for comments.
Figure 2. Total Phosphorus remained about the same during the experiment which is not surprising, as much of this element is probably found in suspended particles algal cells, bacteria, food scraps and not readily available to promote algae growths. TLF also claims that silica is removed by PhosBan as well. Figure 3 shows the results of testing 3 samples gathered over a hour period after initiating treatment with PhosBan. Is there a way i could put both? Use cup of GFO and enough flow to the point where it starts to tumble.
You should see a difference in a few days. Carbon is used for water clarity and removing any smell not red slime. The GFO will absorbs nutrients that the red slime and other alfae needs to survive. I run 2 reactors. The carbon needs alot more flow so it wouldnt be a good idea to put them in the same reactor. Neptune gets there stuff from from Bulk Reef Supply. If you are adding GFO for the first time to you system, it would be a good idea to cut the recommended dose in half and ramp up to the full amount over time vs.
GFO won't help much, but carbon and doing water changes will. I would look at why your having a nutrient export problem and not focus on how to cover it up as it'll just come back and bite you again. I boght two of these, one for carbon, one for GFO. So far this has been a great reactor. I went against the grain with my install, bonding threaded connections onto the hose barbs to hard pipe them into the system.
As far as the leaking or tight cap goes, I've yet to see an issue with this. Just be sure to clear any debris frpm the o-ring and don't over tighten it. Advantages: Affordable, compact, and effective. Disadvantages: Removable hose barbs from the lids would be nice to expand install options. Roman Galan. Nicholas Melka. The Phosban reactor can work great with GFO!
Make sure the foam pads are in place and it will work without issue. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions! A popular and durable option is the Sicce 1. An alternative can include the Cobalt MJ or the maxijet as well. I have included a few links below! What type of pump do you recommend for the PhosBan Reactor ?
I assume it is a submersed water pump? Hi there, Thank you for reaching out. A Sicce 1. Have a great day! What distance or what is the maximum length of tubing allowed on a phosbN reactor. There isn't really a specific length of hose for this reactor, but rather distance and height limitations would be based on the pump you are using to drive water.
I want to use polyethylene tubes with this. Can I use them? Thanks for contacting BRS! Can I use this to run both carbon and GFO in one reactor. How often should I change media? I have a 66G aquarium. You can mix the two medias together and run both in the same reactor.
We suggest using our reef calculator to determine the exact amount of media to use for your system. You will want to exchange the media every two weeks since carbon is not all that effective past 2 weeks.
I've heard the improper set-up or to much medium can crash your tank. Can you explain? When using Carbon or GFO in a reactor you should use the recommended amount listed in our aquarium calculator. There is a chance that running excessive GFO will shock the system with changes.
