How much to get a cavity filled

Sometimes fillings are needed to address problems other than cavities. If you chip a tooth, your dentist may recommend a filling to repair the chip. Some patients who grind their teeth eventually wear down their enamel to the point that a dental filling is needed to prevent further damage. Biting your nails and using your teeth to open packages may also cause enamel wear and chips that your dentist would need to fix with a filling. Years ago, fillings were always made from metal; usually either gold or silver was used.

Metal fillings were and are very durable, but many patients do not enjoy how obvious they are in the mouth. Thankfully, there are now tooth-colored options, like composite resin and porcelain, which make fillings much less obvious in patients' mouths. Your dentist can help you decide on the best material for your filling based on the location of the tooth that needs filling, your budget, the size of the cavity, and your personal preferences.

Metal fillings are still the most durable option. Gold fillings can last for decades or even an entire lifetime, and silver fillings frequently last 10 years or more. Many patients still choose metal fillings for cavities and chips in back molars, since these teeth are not easily seen when they smile. Metal fillings are also the most affordable option in most cases. Today, most are a blend of metals including mercury, silver, and tin. Composite resin fillings are made from a specialized epoxy material that contains silica or ceramic for strength.

They can be specially colored to blend in with the natural color of your tooth, which makes them a popular choice for front teeth and other areas that are visible when you smile. Your dentist does not have to remove as much tooth material when inserting a composite filling as when inserting a metal filling.

For this reason, your dentist is likely to recommend composite fillings for larger cavities. One drawback to composite fillings is that they do not last as long as metals. You may need to have your fillings replaced every 10 years or sooner. Porcelain fillings are also known as inlays. They are the most costly of all of the filling options, but they do last longer than composite resin fillings. Dentists more often use inlays for worn or abraded teeth than for treating cavities.

Having a tooth filled generally takes between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the size of the cavity or the extent of the tooth damage. If you need multiple cavities, chips, or worn areas repaired, your dentist may recommend having them all filled during one appointment since this means you'll only need to have your mouth numbed once. When you arrive for your filling appointment, your dentist will begin by applying a numbing gel to a small area on the inside of your cheek.

Once the cheek tissue is numb, your dentist will inject a local anesthetic to numb the tooth that needs work. It will take a few minutes for the local anesthetic to take effect, but when it does, your dentist will begin using a high speed drill to wear away any damaged tooth material.

You may feel some pressure and vibrations during this phase of the filling process, but you should not feel any pain. Once the decayed or damaged material has been removed, your dentist may rinse the tooth with a fluoride solution to prevent further decay.

This rinse may have a sour and somewhat unpleasant taste, but it will only be in your mouth briefly. What am I to do? I know why many people do not have any teeth because they can't afford it. The dentures are too costly. For costly procedures that may come up in the future, it might be worthwhile to get a second opinion from a reputable dentist.

Not a month before I was told I had a cavity on an upper tooth. Fillings done on bottom tooth. Left the surface rough. When I complained was told "well we were watching those 2 cavities. Teeth 19 and Pediatrics dentist. Scheduled to have one done but dentist found another and went ahead without my knowledge.

Sounds like a ripoff. Might change office. Thanks comfort dental I won't be coming back. I went to the dental college clinic.

Very good service. Way cheaper than a private dentist. I find value in dental care. I want to be able to eat what I want without pain or sensitivity. I want to smile with clean, white teeth. I want to be able to speak clearly because I have all of my teeth and they're not missing or malaligned.

I don't want to have a surgery or take my teeth in and out because I lost them. I value my teeth, so I take care of them myself by brushing and flossing everyday. And on occasion, when the costly dental appointment comes up, I pay it because it gives me a better quality of life. How do you go from zero to 3 surface in 6 months? Check out local colleges in your area. The college was super clean, the students were so sweet and smart, and you were triple checked by a certified dentist.

The minor negative, because you're triple checked expect to be there triple time. Seriously though, give the dentists in training an opportunity to practice :. April My 9 year old developed an abscess on his baby molar, which after dentist inspected said it needed to be fixed right away to prevent damage to permanent molar. I am handed a Treatment plan with codes D, D, D, D estimated dentist time will be one hour. I am at a lose as to why dentists charge extremely high A whole month of earnings the dentist gets in one hour This was a pediatric dentist I went to for my 6 year old son in Augusta ga.

This dentist totally ripped us off. This does not in;ude the cost of xrays, visit, consultation etc. They also never gave us any options or the costs upfront. Just a bill. I feel I might have saved with another provider. I'm not going to travel two hours here and two hours home again!!!! I should have asked for a price quote up front, but the teeth needed to be fixed so it probably would not have mattered.

It is no wonder people don't take their kids for proper dental care. No insurance because most policies cover so little. Had to have 3 pin hole cavities filled. Two on top and one on the bottom. I think dentists are ripping people off. I had a small one surface filling, without novicaine, thats how small it was and it was dollars.

These are what you probably think of first when you think of a dental filling. Composite fillings are made of a combination of acrylic resin and finely ground glass-like particles. Unlike metal fillings, these are much closer to the natural color of a tooth, and are therefore far less noticeable. As you may imagine, this has a lot to do with the fact that making things out of gold, instead of synthetic materials or cheaper metals, simply costs more.

So why is there so much variation in price within filling material types? If a cavity is fairly small and in an easy-to-reach tooth near the front of your mouth, it will take the dentist less time and energy to fill it.

But if you have a large cavity in a back molar, for instance, your dentist will have to work harder to fix it. Plus, larger cavities require larger amounts of material to fill them.
